Lawman, not sure if this link works, but, looks like they more then considered it. Looks like it was done.

youarekidding - Saturday, November 1 2008 at 10:28pm

From the articles that I have read so far, it looks like they will try and keep running under protection. Sounds promising.

Sorry, I am in deep sorrow after the football game.

Yes, I hope they keep going also, but I am still curious, if ethanol is such a good thing, why the taxpayers have to subsidise it.

Oh well, what do I know???

Optimist - Saturday, November 1 2008 at 11:56pm

After reading through several of the comments in this section of the website, I'm a bit frustrated. Most sections of this type on other websites that I visit (such as the Lincoln Journal Star) leave it up to the users to determine whether they post positive or negative comments. Why is the administration for this website so set on encouraging only negative comments? The description from the front page reads as follows:

"Would you like to be able to respond to what you read or hear without fear of losing your job, customers or ticking off someone that could make your life a little tougher than it already is? Welcome to Ord Talk! Comments are Anonymous and the rules for good manners apply!"

Whatever happened to trying to see the good in things that are happening? I understand that people need to vent, but acknowledging that good things also happen in Ord would certainly lead to a more open and constructive discussion of the things that do need improvement. Please encourage people to make the most out of this site instead of only coming here to "[s]ound off about what ticks you off."

Optimist,
Well it looks like you are getting a different front page then I am. I decided to leave a post the other day and went to the page that said how to use the site. There was a section for, well, venting (by nature that is kind of got that negative tone) and there was a section for the opposite---no venting allowed (for the warm and fuzzy). Looked pretty darn balanced too me. I read the rules and tried to stay within boundaries.
Not sure how you can determine that the administration of this site is encouraging just negative comments, but it sure looked like yours was in the venting area, instead of the warm and fuzzy area that you would like to see and could have just as well posted in.
I am 90% for warm and fuzzy if it will work. Did you have some specific issues in mind? The other 10%, well, I just cant bring myself to be, ok, nice all the time.
Seriously though, of the few blogs or community discussion sites that I have looked at, most end up leaning slightly to, what I would call the negative side, but I do find that there are many good ideas and thoughts even in those sites.

Thank you for the added description about "The New Day" section of your website. From the front page, I didn't really notice it since there wasn't a description of what it was (I should have clicked on it just to check). I now notice the full description from the "How to Use Ord Talk" button; I must have not scrolled down far enough when I was reading through last night (glad I got that extra hour this morning!). I'll be over in that section from now on; for those of you who haven't posted over there already, I encourage you to join me (at least occassionally)!

Hello Optimist,
Welcome to OrdTalk! We're just getting started here and we wanted to make sure everyone had a place they could go to to express their opinions (just as you have done!) regardless of what those opinions might be. Thats why the separate links for the happy happy joy joy crowd and the perennial whiners of the world (of which I occasionally happen to be one!) When you scan through the blogs nation wide its nice to be able to pick and choose whether you want good news or you want to look to the darkside. Thats the purpose of the Viral Vent and the New Day. I hope that helps explain the rationale for the two links. This portion of OrdTalk will probably morph into something unrecognizable from what it is in these early days, but so much the better, give it chance to grow. Thanks again for your comments and Have a Nice Day!

How is buying the lot next to the high school a waste of money. Land is the biggest investment one can make. This money was not wasted but put to great use. I feel that the school board is doing a great job making the decisions they are with the future in mind. Why invest thousands of dollars into a school that hopefully in ten or more years will be nonexistent? Ord is an amazing community and I hope to someday come back and raise a family here and have my kids graduate from Ord High School as I did. With the negativity in this community right now I would never want to be raising a family in this environment.

Frank - Monday, November 3 2008 at 9:58am

I attended the school board forum last evening at Ord and was very disappointed in the behavior of several of the candidates. They personally attacked other candidates and questioned their "right" to run for office because they did not have children in High School. The FACT is that the only one of the candidates currently running has a child attending the high school and that candidate is Allen Volf. Candidates Petska and Blaha do not have any children in the Ord Public Schools. Candidate Baker has two children in Ord Public Schools, Candidate Stevens has three children in Ord Public Schools and Candidate Radil has one child in the Ord Public Schools. The FACT is that the Ord School Board makes decisions not only for the High School, but for the whole school system, including the elementary school and remote learning centers. They also make decisions on how to spend money paid by taxpayers in the school district--the majority of whom do not have children in the High School or in the elementary schools.
Every citizen has an equal right to run for office. Many people are concerned about the youth in our community getting the best education possible. Several of our current school board members do not currently have children attending Ord Public Schools. They have been making decisions about what is best for the students of Ord for years. Why then should Candidates Stevens and Baker, but not Candidates Petska and Blaha be disqualified from running because they do not have children in the High School?????

dim - Monday, November 3 2008 at 9:04pm

Outsider claims they will not return to Ord because of negativity.

But look at this news release on the ethanol plant: "yes we may lose a business from time to time, but at the same time you have to keep an attitude of being able to bounce back and addressing those issues very proactively and progressively,” said Caleb Pollard, Valley County Economic Development."

What other town this size could spin this bankruptcy into a positive?
What other town this size could afford to spend $75,000 per year for a spin man?
What other town could allow a school board member with inside knowledge to profit 50 grand on land to support a new cell phone tower?
What other town could afford to invest $6 million in a tax free business venture in which several school board members are personally invested?
What other town could support a school board campaign where the incumbents attack challengers on a personal level, and the challengers refuse to dip to their level?
how many school boards could fit the middleman in on a real estate deal and allow the middleman to take home the pudding - all on public tax dollars?
How about the attic - look how economic development snookered that poor fool from Californy - the building has been destroyed and he lost big time cash!!!
How many towns can build a dental office facade on main street where old folks from the nursing home are wheeled in to nod off before a psychiatrist appearing from Texas on television, and - knock down $150 bucks per head -- per day!!

Think of the positives!!

outsider - Monday, November 3 2008 at 11:33pm

It is hard to think of the positives but you are right Ord is a great community. I feel that I was privileged to be able to grow up in this community and I someday will have the privilege of coming back and raising my children. In order to keep this great community on the cutting edge many changes to the school system which the current school board is doing a great job of.

roberta538 - Tuesday, November 4 2008 at 9:30am

Dim on November 3rd wrote about many things on how Ord works. The short version is that if you are not part of the "Maffia" you won't make much money. You won't be a part of the " sick sweet"
deals that are pushed through at the tax payers
expense. But oh lets remember the famous words of Bob Stowell "for the good of the community". No not for the good of the community but rather for the good of a select few!

Successful OHS Grad. - Tuesday, November 4 2008 at 5:41pm

For those of you who haven't voted yet and are thinking of Steffan Baker for the school board, you may want to check out his most recent post under his profile in the "Meet the Candidates" section. To him, Ord High gradautes are only capable of being "work-a-day drones that do nothing but earn a living, take up space and never accomplish anything that might make a difference in the world...WHY do you think I homeschool my two oldest children?"

privy11 - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 9:06am

It looks like the voters spoke. To Julie, Steffan & Alan: Just remember that one out of every two people you meet today voted against you, your video cameras and your attitude towards Ord Public Schools.

Unknown/Guest - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 11:12am

In response to privy11

Julie, Steffan and Alan,
Don't worry about the people you meet. You can hold your head high with the knowledge that you ran a clean, above board, honest campaign. The cheap shots were taken by the opponents. Your vilagiance brought many things to light about the current board that I was previously unaware of. I needed to know these issues to make an informed choice. It is too bad your message didn't reach more of the voters so they could also make an informed choice. Your attitude and positive vision for Ord Public Schools future is not the same as critisim of the poor decisions the board has made in the past. The board is not Ord Puclic Schools. The board should be the peoples representative to Ord Public Schools. I don't think privy11 understands this difference.
The statement that "people voted against you" is not totally correct. I believe many of the voters didn't know the issues or candidates and voted uninformed. Responsible voters vote FOR a candidate, vindictive people vote AGAINST candidates. I choose to believe that there are not that many vindictive people in Ord and think Ord is a better community than this. Please keep up the good work.

youarekidding - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 12:17pm

Hear, Hear C Hunter,

Privy11 has just insulted the very people that voted for Marty, Sue and Kim except for those individuals that voted in vindication, (which like you I hope isnt how our community thinks as a whole) and the whole voting community of Ord.

We vote for individuals (who have asked for the job) based on the knowledge we have at hand, and we vote for who we think will do the best job. We expect them too use wisdom and prudence in that job for the time that they are allotted. In the case of school boards, we place our very own children in their indirect care and we supply the money for those childrens care. We expect our children to be safe and the money spent wisely.

Privy11, I think you owe an apology to the voting community of Ord, Nebraska including all 6 candidates that ran for school board. For those people that voted out of vindication, no apology required, may they reap their just rewards. It is shameful that you insulted so many people in this community with your one comment.

julie stevens - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 12:25pm

Well, congratulations to Kim, Marty, and Sue! I hope they take our ideas to advance academics through laptops for students and implement it. It would be a win-win would it not? The political process does not need to be a vindictive battle. Rather it should be an exchange of ideas and visions which others vote on. I don't see it as a slam on us. People apparently value sports over academics which is their right to choose. I don't have to agree!! :)

dim - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 1:55pm

privy11: you have done a fine job representing the current school board. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat...

No, I choose to remember that one out of every two people voted for us. Judging by the stats, those who pushed the other three candidates over the top do not even live in Ord but attend school else where. Those people won't be paying the taxes but their parents sure will. Should they choose to move back to Ord and raise their children here, they will have a much higher price to pay. I'll leave you to figure that one out.

serenity - Wednesday, November 5 2008 at 1:59pm

Isn't a privy an old fashioned outhouse, and you have 11 of them?! I'm impressed! Don't know as I've ever heard anyone quite so full of it.
