Looks like this will all be coming to a head on Friday at High Noon. Lets hope the School Board has what it takes to step out into the street, stick to their guns and face down the Teachers Union.

UPDATE!

School Board Statement

We, the members of the Ord Public Schools’ Board of Education, need to clear the air and take responsibility for the mistakes we have made during the recent superintendent search.

Due to a failure in communcication about our policy on nepotism between us as a board and the applicants, and between us as board members, one of the applicants was excluded from consideration for the job of superintendent. We take full blame for this and are deeply sorry for any hardships we have caused to all those affected.

Once we became aware of this situation, we held a special meeting to discuss our options and what steps should be taken moving forward. This meeting was held on January 25th. The situation is still being assessed, and we are looking forward to making a decision on an applicant soon. It is extremely important to us that our choice of a new superintendent be based soley on the facts and what is best for our students and our community. We do not take the mistakes we have made or the decision at hand lightly and ask for your support moving forward.

Oh my! Nepotism in the public sector is always a bad thing! The appearence of impropriety alone should have been enough for the school board to have stepped away from this one and stuck to its original decision. You can smell the lawsuits from here no matter which way this goes.

We have several husband/wife teams on the Ord School systems payroll and it seems to work well because neither one of them is the boss. This is a different animal. Mr. Alexander and the School Board may well run the risk of splitting the community even further in the same fashion that the Hospital Board did over the doctor issue almost a decade ago. Hows that working out for everybody? Food for thought, I hope you choose wisely.

Admin.

SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS SPECIAL MEETING THIS MORNING AT 10:00 AM TO RECONSIDER SUPERINTENDENT CHOICE

Supporters of Jason Alexander rally to influence decision.

In a special school board meeting this morning supporters of Elementary principal Jason Alexander voiced their concerns over the choice of another candidate for Administrator of Ord Public school system. As of 11:00 the board is still in executive session. Video of the public portion of the meeting will be available shortly. When the board reconvenes we will report whether or not they decided to take any action.

Admin.

Both videos, up and running.

4:30PM and School Board STILL in Executive Session. If they vote to hire Jason Alexander, what does that mean for Mr. Steffensen of Shelton? Has the Shelton School Board already hired a replacement for Steffensen? Judging from the comments of the teachers rep., would the teachers support anybody but Mr. Alexander?

Update!

The School Board has come out of Executive session (4:35) and will not be making a decision today. According to Board President Bill Ziegler there are some heating and airconditing issues at the grade school that may require a special session and if that is the case this issue will be dealt with then. Otherwise they will take it up at the next regular board meeting in Feb.

Very interesting. Both Jake and Steffan are graduates of Ord High School yet only one of them can correctly spell anonymity. Tsk tsk tsk!

falcon - Friday, January 28 2011 at 1:11pm

ordneb,
Since you missed the point can you spell nit-picker?

steffan baker - Friday, January 28 2011 at 1:58pm

Happens when I get in a hurry! I'll just have Admin. fix it for me!

hunter4766 - Friday, January 28 2011 at 2:04pm

In his eagerness to support fiscal insobriety, Ordneb missed his creation of a split infinitive.
Perhaps more study time is in order for him.
Not all elitists, those prone to condescension, or those addicted to ridicule are bad people.
Some actually have a medical problem:

It appears that the treatment is the same, though.

hunter4766 - Friday, January 28 2011 at 2:17pm

misplaced modifier, not split infinitive, mind you.

ordneb - Friday, January 28 2011 at 3:20pm

Falcon, I did not miss the point and I would suspect that Mr. Baker appreciated the satirical nature of my comment.

Hunter, I only created a misplaced modifier if one subscribes to your interpretation of proper sentence structure. Since my post was written in freestyle prose it was not grammatically incorrect.

I do apologize for the attempt at humor considering the gravity of the situation being discussed. In closing, if you find this response to be educationally superior to your level of understanding let me simply say, "Bite me!"

When you watch these people appealing the board’s decision don’t you get anxious for our kids? The OEA mob leader and others comes across with such a “my way or the highway” approach. They have such an entitlement expectation – “we want Alexander so give him to us,” period! To the extent the union members teach our children this approach with such examples, they are building a future of non-producers who will not advance by merit, it’s all by identity. Who you are identified with determines who gets the rewards, regardless of what it does to our kids. The board considered all factors and made a good-faith offer to Superintendent Steffensen. They made their reasoned deliberative decision based on a totality of input. So OEA bullies - live with it!!

anonymous - Saturday, January 29 2011 at 9:51am

Another thought - So many of those who got their way on the school bond are now saying we need to “build bridges” to restore our community. Building bridges means accommodating needs and adjusting expectations on both sides of the “river”. And just when the Ord school board plants some deep, firm pylons to start building that bridge, by extending an offer to Superintendent Steffensen, those who’ve been crying the loudest about building bridges show up to “blow the foundations of this bridge out of the water”. Building bridges, in this mob’s view, will only occur if it profits them and those they identify with. Everyone else can get carried away by the financial flood waters, as far as they are concerned.

anonymous - Saturday, January 29 2011 at 9:54am

And something else - I understand Superintendent Steffensen is gifted at rewarding excellent teachers and weeding out the freeloaders who really aren’t teaching the children. But that may develop into a problem with Wendy Alexander if the reports around town are true. Parents were saying she was calling some of them over Christmas and asking their children to sign up for her chemistry class. Why? The kids aren’t learning from her and are not being prepared for college sciences. Students feel it is a waste of time. So Wendy has to call and recruit. Why do we keep her then? Oh, I know. It’s because she meets the need of the “most important” function of our school – entertaining adults by taking the girls’ volleyball team to state and winning. I wonder if the OEA mob is frightened that Superintendent Steffensen might have greater priorities for our kids and not put up with such classroom incompetence.

anonymous - Saturday, January 29 2011 at 9:58am

I went back and watched the videos again. Something hit me this time. I don’t understand what these people are doing at the board meeting? If the board made their decision and offered Superintendent Steffensen a job, is it now Mr. Alexander who wants this appealed? If so, why didn’t he come before the board instead of sending these people? Or, doesn’t he want to appeal their decision? If he does not, then why doesn’t he make a statement separating himself from these unwarranted pleas of others? If he did want them to be there, why didn’t he go himself? He is supposed to be such a “leader” then why not lead his mob! But if he approves of their coming to appeal to the board on his behalf, is he trying to stir up trouble by proxy? That way if it goes bad (I.e. lawsuit) he can easily distance himself from it. If this is not so, then he should make his own case. But if it is so - shame on him! What say ye Jason!!

topgun - Saturday, January 29 2011 at 12:18pm

Anonymous, I fully agree with you about the problem with Wendy Alexander. As a former student of her Chemistry and Physics classes I can tell you she is definitely not qualified, she was hired for coaching and coaching only. May I remind everyone she holds a biology degree, yet she is "teaching" (if you can call it that) chemistry and physics. Not something that is in the best interest of the OHS students. As far as her meeting the "most important" function by being the volleyball coach that won state, let's not give her too much credit...most of those girls were seniors when she became coach with skills that were already developed.

I don't know Jason personally, so I really have no opinion on whether he is qualified for the job or not, but in doing research I do believe that the spousal nepotism that would be displayed by having one spouse holding a position that allows them formal influence over the other (superintendent/teacher)would cause a conflict of interest and be unethical. journals.htm If the board does decide to reverse their decision and offer Jason the job, I would suggest they STRONGLY consider asking Mrs. Alexander to leave the system. If a student has an issue with her as a teacher, which having gone through her class I know many of them do, the chain of command that must be followed goes TEACHER-PRINCIPAL-SUPERINTENDENT. It seems to me that it would be a little hard to discipline someone you are sleeping with.

hunter4766 - Sunday, January 30 2011 at 8:11pm

somebody wake up admin, he should pitch these pugilistic attacks.

Jesusfan - Monday, January 31 2011 at 8:26am

I watched the videos and just read the statement from the school board. It sounds to me like if anyone would have grounds for a lawsuit, it might be Alexander. Think about it, they didn't consider him because they miscommunicated a rule, not because of his merit (hold on...not making arguments about his merit, just going by what the board says!). Let me know if I'm way off base here, but this might have more to do with legality than with the outcry from the teachers.

Anonymous - I agree that the nepotism issue has some huge pitfalls that need to be addressed here. HOWEVER, I have seen this sort of arrangement work before. In that situation, the school board, superintendent, principal, and teacher, all got together and wrote up a procedure for certain things where a conflict of interest might have presented itself. Not saying it will happen here, but just saying it can work if they think through it.

Steffan - So you aren't afraid that you get charged more for goods and services that you purchase around here because of your views? :-)

steffan baker - Monday, January 31 2011 at 9:24am

Hello Jesusfan,
If I do get charged more for certain goods or services I am unaware of it or if I think the charges are out of line I just don't shop there anymore. We buy our groceries, clothes, vehicles and appliances locally. If something needs fixed, we try to find someone in town to do it. (recently had a sewing machine fixed and bought a freezer at Browns a couple of months ago) My business has been closed to the public for the last 7 years and all our sales are internet based, so we do bring outside money into the community. If someone wants to charge me more because of my views, they are welcome to it, but they will face a higher judgement than anything I might do to "get even".

Jesusfan - Monday, January 31 2011 at 10:53am

Wrong side of the bed this morning, Steffan? I meant it as a joke, sheesh! :)

Buffalo - Monday, January 31 2011 at 1:46pm

I think a lot of this also boils down to whether this Steffensen was checked out by the School Board when he was the superintendent in Blue Hill. It doesn't take much to pick up the phone and call Blue Hill school board members at the time he was there to find out why he was asked to leave their school. Oh yeah, I know Boilsen has been at the coffee shop saying he wasn't asked to leave. Since when is anything he said true. Wasn't he a past Hospital Board member? Go fiqure!

Bottom line. Get to the truth before any candidate is hired. Check out bylaws. It's not that hard to hire someone.

steffan baker - Monday, January 31 2011 at 3:24pm

Sorry Jesusfan, I didn't take it as anything other than a literal honest question which I answered to the best of my ability. I'm proud of our town that we can shop here and get most everything we need that is not business related. (no tanneries, textile mills or rubber tubing distribution centers). Sorry if came off as cranky, that didn't happen til this afternoon when I had to go out to get wood for the stove!

mythfluffer - Monday, January 31 2011 at 8:17pm

Buffalo, I am going to have to go along with your thoughts and agree on this one. Boilsen was in thick with the hospital, hangs tight with "boss hog" and yeah.... stretches the truth at the coffee shop. Lied about the hospital, and I would imagine lying about this also.

Track record of Steffensen is in wonderment.....but I think the school board is stuck on this one. This guy is smart enough to know whether he was hired or not, and if he thought he was hired and gave his notice at Shelton, he was hired.
The board cannot go back pedaling. They have just created a world of legal boo-boos!

Steffan, I admire the work you are doing. Hang in there. I respect your opinions. Maybe they are not the same as mine always, but none the less, I respect that you stand up for them, I know it has not always been an easy road.

You are doing a great job and I appreciate all that is brought to ord talk.

crash - Tuesday, February 1 2011 at 7:21am

The board better knuckle under, bow down to the staff and hire this Alexander character pronto before they all blow a gasket and quit. After all they know how a school should be run.

The simple solution is Wendy quits, pay Jason enough to make up her salary and his legal fees (incurred for the impending lawsuit), then let him hire a new coach, a new chem teacher and a new principle.

Forget Steffensen. He has already been a superintendent, knows how to fire poor teachers, is an outsider who could not possibly promote "healing" in this community and would surely drop any legal action for several hundred grand.

Its a WIN WIN WIN !

hunter4766 - Wednesday, February 2 2011 at 1:28am

Another misplaced modifier.
"There he goes again!..." (Ordneb as Mondale)
