School Board Forum: Allen Volf

1. Why are you running for the school board?

I first became interested in running for the Ord School Board when I learned how our current board abused their power to buy the houses and lots east of the High School. I also did not like the way the board and the architects tried to manipulate and promote a bond for a gymnasium and a new addition.

I believe the life safety code violations should have been addressed a long time ago. Another reason I am running for school board is I have two kids in high school and I want them to get the best education District 5 can offer.

2. What is your vision for the Ord Public School System over the next five years? What are your specific plans to get there?

If elected I will strive to improve technology by utilizing the distance learning center to a much higher level. Also during my term in office I would like to see that every child is furnished with a laptop computer to enhance their education, like many other schools across Nebraska are doing.

I believe many of our building improvements can be done by budgeting for them and not relying on a bond. Heating, cooling and life safety code violations would get the highest priority.

Recently our current board has been considering building a new gymnasium and major remodeling of the 1928 building, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. I am not in favor of that kind of spending with the declining enrollment we now have.

I have already commented about budgeting or saving for improvements on Steffan Baker's page, so I won't here. However, I was unaware a decision was made on what the building plans were exactly, and apparently so is the current school board and the superintendent.

I do like that you lean towards frugality, so I would like to hear your answers to all of the questions that Mr. Baker answered on his page so I can get to know your views better.

Apparently, that hundred grand or so spent by the school board on the school bond informercials didn't REALLY mean that the board wanted to spend 20 million or whatever it was. Tell us, Nero, then what did all these numbers mean? Nero must have been confused by Mighty Max's recent newspaper article, which states that 'right now' no building is under consideration. Nero - go find out from Max what his 'right now' means - does it mean 'right now as I am writing my column' does it mean 'this month' does it mean 'last week when the column was submitted to the paper' - perhaps the best interpretation is 'until we get our goose stepping board which has voted unanimous on every single vote over the past 2 years except one but we can think independently and no one else can - to be re elected'???
