Political Consultant Assaulted by Ord, NE, Radio Station Personality

For More Information:

Paul Dorr, consultant to Ord, NE’s CARE #5 Political Committee

Ph 712-758-3660

October 28, 2009

Ocheyedan, IA - Thursday night, October 22, 2009, Paul Dorr of Copperhead Consulting Service, Ocheyedan, IA, was assaulted by KNLV radio station personality Andrew Mihm at the conclusion of a Town Hall meeting held in Ord, NE. The meeting was hosted by the CARE 5 committee of Ord, Dorr’s employer. Dorr was hired by CARE 5 to be one of their guest speakers. KNLV radio station is located in Ord.

CARE 5 is involved in a spirited campaign opposing a $9.8 million school bond proposal by the Ord School board. Proponents have held a series of Town meetings where CARE 5 members and other opponents conducted themselves respectfully and courteously. Over the past several months, the school board has brought in consultants from Lincoln and Kearney who were treated with decorum and respect. Dorr attended one such courteous meeting in May of 2008.

Such courtesy was not afforded to CARE 5 and their consultant Paul Dorr, last Thursday evening. Administrators and board members were speaking with agitated tones, keeping the microphones well after asking their questions and attempting to campaign on CARE 5’s time.

The evening ended with a party, who Dorr later confirmed was Andrew Mihm of KNLV radio station, attempting to receive a comment from Dorr. Dorr suspected he was with the media and repeatedly asked Mihm to identify himself. Mihm refused to, continuing to ask his question.

Based on prior actions of Mihm’s Dorr had reason to believe he was hiding behind his anonymity and finally told Mihm that he knew he was bias against Dorr in his reporting on the school bond campaign.

At that point, Mihm lunged forward and hit Dorr on the left hand hard enough to drop a digital recorder out of Dorr’s hand. Mihm took the digital recorder and fled the building, throwing the recorder in a garbage can on his way out. A part of the recorder was later recovered from the garbage can by an Ord, NE, police officer.

A complaint and written statement has been filed by Dorr with the Ord, NE police department. Two eyewitnesses also have filed signed statements. A copy of the audio recording of the conversation between Dorr and Mihm has also been provided to the Ord police department. Additional evidence is available per the request of the Valley County Attorney.

Another news report was broadcast today without providing CARE 5 or our consultant an opportunity to respond to the false accusations. The audio recording made of CARE 5 representative Paul Dorr and Nebraska Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Don Fritz was totally legal under the wire intercept laws of Nebraska. A portion of this recording was recently released to the voters of Ord, NE, by the CARE 5 committee. It has not been edited or altered in any fashion.

Certainly, the recording we broadcast and distributed is not the complete recording of the conversation but it was the relevant portion summarizing Fritz’s answer to CARE 5’s question. Fritz did go on to state that the problem will be in making sure the door can open from either direction, that he needs to be sure it will be kept open and that the locks are off the door. None of these is a problem for CARE 5. Last Thursday night Jan Weber, media specialist (librarian) for Ord Public High School, stood at our Town Hall meeting and said the door was kept open every day from 8AM until 4PM. We believe her.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fritz is aware of the audio recording and has filed no complaint with us, even agreeing to allow us to record him in subsequent conversations. The entire original recording is now posted on www.OrdTalk.com Further, voters will note that the corridor through the library is not discussed between Dorr and Fritz because it is another issue entirely, which CARE 5 has already addressed.

What Is Really Going On Here?

What is really going on is that some of Tom Kruml’s fellow board members were on the inspection trip with Fire Marshal Fritz the day of the inspection and Kruml doesn’t want voters to consider that.

Why did Fritz observe the door locked that day and why was he led to believe that it is this way so that they can have the students exit out the west doors? Again, Jan Weber’s public testimony proves the opposite is true. Tom Kruml needs to answer why it was locked that day.

It appears to CARE 5 that some of the administrators and board members of the school were baiting Mr. Fritz that day, so as to get the worst Fire Marshal’s report they could to use in their future campaign. If this is true, this could provide the best explanation as to why Mr. Kruml is now trying to twist and distort the veracity of our audio recording. Sunshine on dark deeds is always a healthy thing, especially just before one casts a vote.

Fire Marshal's Letter

In last Thursday’s Town Hall meeting CARE 5 revealed Superintendent Kroger’s plan of correction to the Fire Marshal’s order if the bond issue failed. Kroger’s plan of correction, dated August 24, 2009, was provided to CARE 5 by the State Fire Marshal’s office in Lincoln. (See attachment)

CARE 5 points out that Kroger’s letter makes it clear that a bond of nearly $10,000,000 is not necessary to resolve these issues that proponents say will close the school.

Attached is also a letter presented to the attendees at last Thursday nights meeting, from Deputy Fire Chief, Donald Fritz to the superintendent , dated August 28, 2009, tentatively accepting this plan of correction pending the outcome of the bond issue in November.

CARE 5 also notes that neither letter mentions anything about a corridor through the library.

KNLV, Max, school board, and OKF are grasping at straws in desperation at the fallout from the assault, from the rudeness shown at the Care 5 presentation, the reasoning behind the $700 price tag for public documents keeping plan B hidden. What else can they do? The merits of the bond standing on it's own merit is crumbling underneath them. They are already counting the no votes.

sting - Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 5:38pm

Max, school board, and OKF want you to vote on what you know of the school bond. They were also attempting to control what you knew by keeping plan B hidden from your view to the extent of putting a $700 price tag to keep you from getting the entire scope of what you are voting on. Feel manipulated, feel controlled, feel like you're being played for a fool. This is all deserving of a no vote. If they can't be honest about the bond then they are undeserving of your trust.

The SCARE 5 flyer certainly prompted the elderly to consider paying taxes again and losing the homestead exemption. That will likely gain some elderly to vote against. Shame on SCARE 5 individual members. However, the that tactic will shut many more Dorr's in your faces of hypocrisy.

The fair thing to do would be to send another flyer with an apology and explain that their houses will not be subjected to tax that the exemption has eliminated in the past.

Let's see you become the FAIR 5 committee. PLEASE! More vote will arrive in on the nay side of the ballot if you behave honorably.

Seems to me I heard some of you begging, "THIS CAMPAIGN IS NOT ABOUT PAUL DORR. IT'S ABOUT THE BOND."

Funny how the lead article on your front page is all about Paul Dorr, and the administrators of this site are the ones that put up the article. Odd? I expected nothing less!

admin - Wednesday, October 28 2009 at 7:49pm

I believe the tape of the State Fire Marshal and Paul Dorr is relevant to the conversation don't you ordneb? Considering the "news break" on KNLV this morning and Tom Krumls comments concerning the missing minutes of the tape it is pretty straight forward and should have answered everybodies questions.

As for the assault story, that came from Copperhead Consultants and from our understanding went out to all news organizations. It was headed "Immediate Release" and so we did. Sorry for being the "Firstest with the Mostest", if you want your news a few days old there are other outlets in town that will be more than happy to accomodate you.

This is not a C.A.R.E. 5 website, when the campaign is over we will still be here as a community forum discussing and commenting on whatever is the chief topic of interest in our fair city at the time.

Well, you just keep telling yourself that. That's fine.

Ordtalk, its the buzz around town.( and the county )

Shakes - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 8:17am

So publishing an article about the assault and everything that happened is unbiased? I know at least three people that have a different "account" of what happened than what this article says. Could it be because the article was WRITTEN BY DORR HIMSELF, OR SOMEONE FROM HIS CONSULTING FIRM? Yep, that's really unbiased reporting!

Admin - Being the first one to put this article up just means you don't care about giving people news that they can trust. Putting that article up right away just means you didn't even think about how slanted it could be due to the fact that it came from the alleged victim. Would you have put up an article from Andrew Mihm on the subject if he had e-mailed it to you and labeled it "Immediate Release?"

Shakes - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 8:24am

Just listened to the recording and was wondering: If the whole reason for this recording coming out is to discredit the idea that the library needs to be moved due to the new corridor (which has already been proven to be needed), why didn't Dorr just come right out and ask, "If that door remains unlocked and therefore the hallway is not a dead end, does there need to be a corridor through the library?"

The argument keeps being that the corridor is not needed, but in this recording it is never even mentioned, so how can you say one way or another?

sting - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 10:40am

Shakes

You are getting closer to the truth. The corridor became an issue AFTER the Care 5 presentation. The slick ones had to look for something to spin and confuse the issue. The fact is the August 24, 2009 letter from Max to the fire marshal (you know the one Max wanted $700 for to keep hidden from the public) outlining the Plan B of correction if the bond failed cover ALL the issues of the corrective order, at an estimated $250,000 -$400,000 rather than the $9.8 million plus interest. Lawyer Tom and company have to do something to divert attention from there hiding the Plan B. How was it Gordon Strong put it? S = Slick in reference to a lawyer.

shakes, Did you see the article on the front pages of the Ord Quiz this week about the assault?

rock - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 12:03pm

Why has KNLV not done a News article on the assault, of a vistor to our town? Could it be that they are embarassed, and ashamed? The assault made the front page of the Quiz! What kind of journalism is KNLV promoting here? Kind of reminds me of the school board, hiding information from the public.

sweetpea - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 1:16pm

Has everyone read yesterday's Vox Pop in the Ord Quiz? Mabel Dobrovsky writes, "What has happened to Valley County? It was just shameful how ill mannered and rude professional people acted at the CARE 5 Town Hall Meeting held at the Vet's Club Thursday evening...A big percent of the opposition were teachers and spouses and School Board members and spouses...Let's not set bad examples for children!...Now how do we explain the behavior of a man that is accusd of attacking our consultant, stomped his tape recorder and broke it beyond repair, than he ran. Is it safe to take an ad to the radio station?..." Poor Mabel is afraid to go to the radio station to give them ads. Looks like KNLV is scaring our seniors with their "THUG" Journalism. I see the Quiz has even reported on the front page about the assault. Last I looked KNLV hadn't touch it, what's up with that?

rock - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 4:48pm

Reading the ord talk article of the attack by Andrew Mihm, it looks like the "trigger word was bias". Strange how Andrew responded to that "B" word. Do you suppose that may have had any relationship to what sting called "controlled release to bias news outlets" days before? When Andrew was told by the Ord PD that nothing was new on Ord's burglaries, even though the burglaries were solved the day before in a cooperative effort by multi jurisdictions.

This reminds me of Mr. Universe's ryme:

Mr. Universe - Monday, October 26 2009 at 5:50pm
KNLV's Andrew Mihm
Let his temper get the best of him
Knocked a recorder out of Paul Doors hand
Now Little Andy is a Wanted Man
Good luck little Andy now don't delay
Got date with the court come Judgement day?
Run boy run as fast as you can
Maybe call in a favor from your best friend Dan
Now its all ALLEDGED but it might be so
Unless sting or stephen got the video
But I was there and saw the whole thing
And from what I saw he's gonna swing!

KNLV says there's suspicious activity involving Ord's special school bond election has been brought to the surface. You bet there has been. Like the woman that wanted to pay mom and dad to put up a yes sign in their yard.

Shakes - Friday, October 30 2009 at 8:06am

sweetpea - I can 100% guarantee that that statement is false, so stop making up crap. Also, I heard the same thing, but what I heard is that people from CARE 5 have been offering to "help" people vote and take in their ballots for them, which was what spurred the article on KNLV. Also heard that someone from the "against" side that rents out houses in town called their tenants and told them to vote against or their rent was going up. I can see calling and saying, "Just to let you know in advance, if the bond passes the rent might go up a bit to cover the taxes on the house." That's fine - it would amount to $10-$20 a month on a $100,000 house (depending on what number you use, 11.4 cents or 19.4 cents), but SCARE 5ING someone into voting against by saying "if you don't vote against this bond, your rent is going up" without any context or figure on how much is pretty shady. Isn't there a federal law against tampering with votes?

rock - Friday, October 30 2009 at 8:09am
I was reading Andrew Mihm's KNLV article.
Suspicious activity involving Ord's special school bond election has been brought to the surface...

How strange, I talked to our election commissioner after reading Andrew's article. She said she had a few inquiries about whether or not people can help others out and deliver their ballots to the court house at the same time they deliver theirs. She said there was nothing she would call suspicious about that. More embellishments... Desperate acts by desperate people. Gee, Andrew you should have learned in journalism that you need to finish the story. What suspicious activity, how has this suspicious activity surfaced, who's doing the suspicious activity, how many accounts of this suspicious activity have occurred, and who has this suspicious activity been reported to?

Come on Andrew, your journalistic integrity (what's left of it), as well as KNLV's is at stake here.

rock - Friday, October 30 2009 at 8:24am

Yes, shakes. Any attempt to influence elections, such as witholding publicly owned documents with a $700 price tag for disclosure (as Max did with Plan B) should be considered in my opinion election tampering.

ordie - Friday, October 30 2009 at 9:22pm

Rock

Gather about the equivalent amount of materials from your office that Dorr requested, take the material to the local copier at the library.
Take each piece and run through the copier for real or fake. Time yourself, add 5 cents for each page copied. Add $10 an hour for your time plus 30 percent for fringes. Yep 700 is about right.

rock - Saturday, October 31 2009 at 9:14am

ordie, Your example is over embellished, and an estimate from Max Kroger, who had reason keeping the voter publicly owned docment hidden. We will never know for sure the answer to just how much time and costs would have been involved in providing the voter publicly owned documents. But now we do know why the $700 price tag. Max, himself stated in an interview with the GI Independent (the link you posted)... "He believes the district's current 10 cents building fund, along with an additional 5 cents allowed throught the federal stimulus package, should be enough to cover the upgrades required by the fire marshall." Max's above statement came about after the Care 5 presentation, where plan B was exposed, at 0 cost from the fire marshal's office in Lincoln, and why Max wanted $700 for copies. As Marty Petska said, "Perception is Reality."

The remaining question is what else do we, the voters not know about this mega bond that's being kept hidden?

Shakes - Monday, November 2 2009 at 8:08am

For one thing Rock, Marty Petska wasn't the one that said that, it was Bill Zeigler (hmmmm...what else could you be getting wrong?). Second, all you idiots are getting the whole meaning of that phrase wrong. "Perception is reality" means that, in this case, if the public perceives something that is not true, it is still reality for those that have the perception that it is true. It's not enough to twist the facts, now you have to twist old sayings, too?

Part 2: (yay, numbering things is coming back!) The biggest reason for the $700 price tag was compiling the e-mails between Max's office, board members, the architect, and any other e-mails pertaining to the bond. These e-mails I'm told went back a few years as they've been talking about things relating to the bond for that long. Finding those e-mails wouldn't be the problem, it is going through each e-mail to make sure it contains pertinent information and not just the mention of the word "bond" in it. Count up the hours for that one and you'll see the $700 is getting off pretty easy. From what I understand, SCARE 5 came back with a different request that got rid of the pricier items and they were given that information quickly and with no statement to the public. Could SCARE 5 be hiding the fact that they worked successfully with Max from the public?
