JayCees Sponser First Soapbox Derby

Winners, close calls and a Need for Speed!

In the first ever Soapbox Derby to be held in Ord the Junior Chamber members may have given rise to a new tradition. Seven cars participated in the race, five from Ord and the surrounding area, two coming all the way from Stromsburg. The cars were as diverse as their drivers with everything from planter wheels, bicycle tires and lawnmower wheels being used for the sole purpose of getting down the hill. Some proved more viable than others but everyone had a good time during the races.

Prior to the start of the race one of the entrants from Stromsburg took his car down the hill and ended up jumping the curb and rolling into a yard. This prompted the sponsers to shorten the track and move it a little farther down the hill to keep the speed down and the level of safety up. It worked like a charm as no one was injured during the races.

In speaking to two of the JayCees members today ordtalk.com has learned that there will be more brackets for next years race. Perhaps a 13 to 16 year old bracket and of course an adult bracket to keep the dads happy!

Much thanks need to be made to the members of the JayCees for sponsering this event and also to the participants for the diversity of cars and drivers.
