Burwell2Day - Saturday, May 9 2009 at 11:27am

I think most people don't know about the gravel pit that is why they haven't spoken up, I didn't know til Friday and that was after the public hearing. They are done with the land they have been working on since 1984 on so the are moving. I heard the Copsey's went to the hearing and made strong objections and no one listened to them. Not surprised I feel like all boards in this town seem very crooked. Travis is leaving but I am not sure if it was to O'Neill or Loup City, I have heard both.

luckyone - Monday, May 11 2009 at 8:22am

ALL of the 'boards' (school, city, ED, etc) only have THEIR best interest at mind IN MY OPINION, regardless of what 'other' people have to say in the 'said' matter on the current agenda of 'said' board. Just the way it's always been unfortunately. I wonder what the council will do on Tuesday, isn't that when they approve it? What about the health hazards for these kids that go to the grade school and play either during recess or just for fun, the dust, allergies, asthma, property values, etc, apparently they didn't take this into consideration on making their recommendation, or maybe I'm just blowing it out of porportion. Thanks for the update!

City Counsel Meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Terry DeGroff came before the counsel and suggested they look into selling the Community Memorial Nursing Home. They formed a committee (2 of the four committee members are: Punk Buhlke & Doc Pedersen) to look into it.

The gravel minning project passed. It remains to be seen if and how it will affect the adjoining properties (ie: settling etc.). Concessions / compromise were agreed that the minning wouldn't start until 10 and that there would be a fence around the operation (among other compromises).

It's unfortunate that the writing is very plain to see for some of us, but for others not so plain....it saddens me that one of our largest employers might close due to some inaffective and incompetent financial management.

Let's say that they sell the Burwell Nursing home to Valley County Health Systems. They promptly close our facility. Just one of many scenarios. Think about it.

ifas - Wednesday, May 13 2009 at 10:23pm

Jeffres Sand and Gravel will be moving their MINING OPERATION behind the Rodeo Inn and the Maverick...it's not quite as benign as a "gravel pit".

mythfluffer - Thursday, May 14 2009 at 10:17am

To ifas:

Thanks for your info. If the nursing home is sold to Valley County, they will close it, "all for the good of the community" you know. They can't stand competition and they are going to need all the business they can drum up. I heard the Mayor was in total agreement. Go figure. The pockets are deep and wide.

What a shame for the Rodeo Inn, they are a nice business, and they deserve better from their community than this.

Burwell2Day - Thursday, May 14 2009 at 1:11pm

Found out today the Gene Cone and The Burwell Livestock Market are in big trouble with the DOT. None of the trucks are liscensed or insured and none of his drivers have CDL's, which is a little scary for the rest of us drivers on the road. They are being hit with some pretty stiff fines.
The news from the city council meeting isn't very encouraging. Sometimes it seems like the are trying to kill our community. I wonder what Terry is getting out of this because this not in our towns' best interest but neither was the gravel pit, but for some reason Terry ****** DeGroff is the word of god in this town. Will this town ever change before its too late.

I understand Burwell is supposed to have a town hall type meeting sometime in the near future...if anyone wants to tape it and have it put on the Burwell Chat as a video, email me at ordtalk@frontiernet.net and I will get you the camera so you can record it.

mythfluffer - Thursday, June 4 2009 at 3:25pm

Well the word is out, we lucky ones in Burwell are going to get a new sign on the edge of town, possible estimates of $69,000 - $90,000. WOW What a sign. Are we lucky or what?

Now that money is going to come from "infrastructure" tax money. So when our water pressure sucks, or the sewer plugs up, or there are huge holes in the street, get out and be glad we "got a sign"!

mythfluffer - Thursday, June 4 2009 at 3:27pm

Well, I have seen a few of our Ord VCHS friends up in Burwell, must have been looking over the nursing home for future use.

Burwell2Day - Friday, June 5 2009 at 1:43pm

So I asked around about this sign and found out that you are undershooting the price a little. I am shocked that infrastructure money would go to such a joke of a cause, reminds of that stupid cowboy statue downtown. The plan is to put it on the rodoe grounds but I guess in order to do that they have to make the fair grounds part of city limits. The whole idea behind the sign thing is that it is suppose to convince travellers that Burwell is a great place to live or visit. I think that if our new ED director wants to convince people that Burwell is a great place, he should maybe start with the people that already live here.

mythfluffer - Wednesday, June 17 2009 at 3:38pm

the boys and girls in the government of Burwell, have learned their lessons well from the Ordite Teachers. Do further research, and see who exactly benefits from their actions. It is not us, the community residents.

I hope the new ED director figures out the "favor system" early, and stays a "stand up guy"! Good Luck.

nice sign,,, does it work??? I dont know where i am.

huskerfan09 - Thursday, September 17 2009 at 2:09pm

Hi Burwell.....

Hope you've been watching and listening to the nursing home information coming out of Sargent....that's what happens when you sell to someone who isn't local and doens't care about the faces, only their bottom line.

Good luck and choose carefully!!!

my2cents - Tuesday, October 6 2009 at 11:46am

Please all who are concerned citizens of Burwell or the surrounding area, let your voices be heard. Speak out against the sale to privatize our nursing home. Look at the lesson that Sargent just learned. We do not need another debacle similar to our loss of the hospital. Shame on all those who would mislead the shareholders. Sealed bids do nothing to demonstrate intent or quality of bidders for Community Memorial Health Center. Sign a petition and get involved. Don't assume that others will do the work for you.

angelbe - Sunday, October 18 2009 at 5:03pm

does any one know if the nursing got bought

luckyone - Thursday, October 29 2009 at 1:29pm

The nursing has NOT been sold as of yet. However, they are sure trying to get it sold, and quickly, I haven't really figured out WHY yet! Definitely NOT a good thing to happen to Burwell, the facility, residents etc!

my2cents - Thursday, November 5 2009 at 6:24am

The meeting of the members of CMHC will be held tonight (Thursday, November 5th) at 7:00 P.M. in the Burwell Legion Club. This will be (so it's said) a vote of the membership to sell or not the business. People have until 4:00 P.M. this afternoon to buy into CMHC for a minimum of $50.00. It's been rumored that certain business owners have purchased memberships for their entire staff but that has not been verified by me. Please attend and let your voices be heard. If you don't attend it's the same as saying that you are for the sale.

Hometowngirl - Friday, November 6 2009 at 10:03am

I think its interesting that Burwell is all for new businesses coming into this town but yet they pick and choose which ones they are going to support. I think we should be more concerned about supporting the businesses we do have instead of getting more to come to this town. We have had alot of new businesses come in and not last very long because the support of the town is not there in my opinion. I think some people have a problem with outsiders coming in and starting up a business in their town. I work at a place that gets very little support from the population of Burwell. A majority of the people that visit our place of business our from out of town and some even out of state. I think it is sad. As a community we should be supporting all area businesses not just the ones that are ran and owned by people that grew up in Burwell. Just something to get people thinking.I don't mean to offend anyone but this is what i think.

truckbroker - Friday, November 13 2009 at 3:30pm

Sometimes the people of Burwell just amaze me. Years ago when the streets of downtown were packed on Thurs- Sat nights, the bank and powers that be didnt want "NEW" business because more businesses ment the possibility of a new bank. Then the dam construction began. Why is it that none of the offices are in Burwell?? The powers that be will never let Burwell do more than just get by. Ask yourselves another question, Where is it that your elderly relatives going once they close, what I call, the hospital?? You are not only going to have to travel out of town for the bulk of your shopping but also to visit your elderly family who cannot stay at the Nursing home in Burwell. What is there for the youth in your community? Why do they leave and not return. Take hold of your community and fight for it now. If its not already to late.
