NPPD Proposes Increases in Wholesale and Retail Electric Rates
As a public power utility, NPPD closely manages the dollars our customers pay for electricity. Historically, our overall electric rates have been significantly lower than the national average. Many electric customers on the East or West coast pay two times more than Nebraskans. Even on a regional basis, NPPD’s average retail electric rates are lower.

However, despite a strong emphasis on controlling costs, several factors are impacting NPPD’s ability to hold rates steady including an increasing demand for electricity and rising fuel, material and equipment costs.

Price increases in the commodities NPPD depends on to operate its business such as natural gas, coal and uranium along with increases in the costs of material and equipment have risen more than 80 percent since 2003.

Approximately 63 percent of NPPD’s total energy sales are to wholesale customers, while 17 percent is to retail customers. To cover increasing costs, NPPD is proposing for 2009 an average wholesale power rate increase of 7 percent and an overall average retail rate increase of 6.4 percent.

This includes an average increase of 5.9 percent for residential customers (approximately $5 more a month on an average electric bill) and 3.1 percent for small commercial customers.

This is the first rate increase for NPPD’s residential and small commercial customer rate classes since 2003. The percentages are based on class average results; individual customer impacts will vary depending upon usage characteristics.

If the rate proposals are approved by NPPD’s Board of Directors at its November meeting, the increases are expected to take effect Jan. 1, 2009.

To learn more about these respective rate proposals, view the Rates Brochure. If you have questions, call 1-877-ASK-NPPD.

The above is to dispell a rumor that NPPD raised residential rates 3% (commercial rates were raised 3.1%). As you can see, NPPD raised residential rates by 5.9%.

At 1:30 today in the Courthouse, the County Commissioners are meeting. The Loup Basin Health Director is on the agenda. Should be interesting.

diggidy dog - Tuesday, January 13 2009 at 1:22pm

who is the loup basin health director you are taling about?

diggidy dog - Tuesday, January 13 2009 at 1:24pm

what topic is the director gonna talk about at the county commissioners meeting?

lost - Tuesday, January 13 2009 at 4:11pm

diggidy dog:

Chuck Cone is the Director of Loup Basin Public Health Department.

He was supposed to appoint or reappoint one or both of the Loup Basin Public Health Department Board of Directors (Cheryl Swett or Nancy Polinoski).

Since Chuck was a no-show, the Garfield County Commissioners reappointed Cheryl Swett.

Is this a bad dream??? Or just deja vu?

em6882 - Wednesday, January 14 2009 at 11:57am

I think it is a BAD DREAM, that we can't wake up from.

I heard the Burwell Mayor has been escorted out of 3 local bars and really isn't welcome to show up again.

This can be confirmed by contacting the local establishments, Northside, Legion, and Southside(Ord)

Doesn't look like we got a bargain in the deal.

I guess we get what we pay for!

Wonder how the City Counsel meeting went?

diggidy dog - Thursday, January 15 2009 at 9:07am

Are you serious that the NEW mayor, not the old mayor, has been thrown out of Bars?!? I think I might call up the bars and confirm this. . .I'm shocked. I guess I'm outta the loop?

diggidy dog - Thursday, January 15 2009 at 9:10am

What was the outcome from the city council meeting on the 13th? in Burwell? I read through that list of people. . . I'm not familar, what's the problem with all those people listed. Are they all bad???

box_top - Thursday, January 15 2009 at 10:21am

Any word/rumors on what's happening with the ED position?

diggidy dog - Thursday, January 15 2009 at 4:02pm

Nope

talleyho - Thursday, January 15 2009 at 11:46pm

Yep! the NEW MAYOR. He has lots of problems, just you watch. It should be interesting.

I think that list of people has some good people on it. Just need to hold their own and not be browbeat.

At the city council meeting, apparently the question was asked how long ago the ED had applied for this position and numerous questions, Mayor Cone, would not address this issue. Something doesn't pass the smell test here.....

But they are up to something, they want to visit with the city manager in private instead of in public, what is this about???? Oh yeah, this is how Ord does it... pointed out by another Cone. Well believe me Ord doesn't pass the smell test no matter which way the wind is blowing. Stay away from there!!!!

Be original do something that is ethically and morally right, don't take direction from Ord. They are a smoking volcano.

serenity - Friday, January 16 2009 at 5:29pm

Sorry,
That ethical and moral train left the station back in '72...

em6882 - Monday, January 19 2009 at 4:52pm

Well, might was well post here too, Burwell if you are following along with the Ord crowd, which so far all your actions point to that.....warn your community members that their days are numbered. They'll soon get to be right up there with Ord, full of crooks, and scoundrels, and high taxes.
Gee, it is no wonder why everyone wants to move to Ord, hee!hee!hee!

lost - Monday, January 19 2009 at 10:28pm

We zig and they ZAG! Hard to put a stop to them when they are one step ahead of you!

I guess some of us don't think like crooks and scoundrels.

Hope Mt. St. Helens doesn't erupt right here in Burwell! Not sure if we could take the fall out!
