Have you all heard about the firing of Lynn Franzen the Burwell Economic Development Director? Thank goodness Burwell people still have control of their city council - unlike Ord. Ord has no board that is not controlled by Boss Hog. Have you seen what an interest KNLV has taken in this story? I understand Mr. KNLV owner has been having a blog about this subject and has emailed a blogger wanting to know who she was affiliated with since she/he was in full agreement with the dismissal of Ms. Franzen. Now lets ask why he is so interested? Is it because the power brokers in Ord have their fingers all over Burwell business too and are trying to get control of their town also? I think it will only be a matter of time before they get control over the Burwell Nursing Home. They have been working on that for awhile. And as far as the Economic Development office in Burwell they had control of that and want it back. That is why they want Lynn Franzen hired back. And I wonder how much money Mr. KNLV Radio has invested in the Burwell Investment club. The bigger question is who really put up the money? I would not be surprised to learn that it is really Boss Hog that put up the money. He always like to do things under the table.

I was very surprised today, to receive a local political ad in the mail. Surprised, because I figured that encumbant Ord School board members would have understood that they were not in touch with the taxpayers vision of the future, for our students, and would step down and let new individuals with more practical ideas take the helm.
Part of the ad stated that "My decisions as a board member will come from a true desire to do what is best for the students in our district over the long term." I would agree with that, being a wonderful desire, except short term decisions, should not be sacrificed, like current needed repairs, put off, for long term hopes of a new facility. Past actions reflect the true desire and vision, not words on paper.
I find it strange that someone with no children in the school system is concerned with electing individuals that have children in the community and who have shown great vested interest in the public school system going to numerous school bond and school board meetings. I do believe that these individuals would invest in our students education rather than real estate without a sound business plan. I honestly don't know if all "three candidates running together" homeschool their children, but what a promising statement, that they would want to be involved in the public school system. To me, that shows self-sacrifice and true investment in education.

Can someone tell me when prayer and honoring the flag stopped in public schools.

And then can you tell me why???

I came to this site hoping to be able to speak my mind and find out more about the happenings in Ord. Right now my mind is on the upcoming election, and with that in mind I read the candidates answers to the questions posted. Then, with the understanding that this site was open to all opinions, not just some, I commented on one of the candidates answers. I meant no ill will, but found that apparently speaking my mind and disagreeing with one of the "new" candidates instead of dragging an incumbent through the mud as "youarekidding" did here (I guess I don't know which one since I haven't recieved the letter), my opinion was suppressed. So much for the 1st Amendment and for the validity of this site. Hopefully the "powers that be" will actually post this.

Hello Nero,
I checked the candidates forum and nothing came in for comments. If you would like to resubmit your comment and let me know where you want it put I will be happy to do that for you. The above comment is the only one I can find that we have received. Thanks for your patience and look forward to hearing back from you.

Nero - Thursday, October 30 2008 at 2:45pm

Sorry for the harsh comments. They were obviously written too soon and were somewhat uncalled for. However, I do have to say that I have been listening to the comments of Volf, Stevens, and Baker as well as Petska, Radil, and Blaha and have found that Volf, Stevens, and Baker are intent on using the same negative politics that most people claim to hate. Now, I don't know any of the candidates that well personally, but I do know that for me, a recent graduate of Ord High School, I take offense to any person that would for the most part say I had a second-rate education because I wasn't part of the country school system or I wasn't home-schooled. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against families who choose this route, but I do have something against those who would treat me, a public school graduate, as a bad influence on their children and someone who is ill-educated because of the system I was in.

I beg of all candidates and all those involved: Stop bashing others for your own gain, win on your own credentials. If anyone has a problem with this, then I guess we know who can't win in a positive manner.

Again, sorry for my comments earlier as to the posting of a previous entry.

Actually my question was asked in a facetious manner. I know the answer. It was when political correctness came into being. Now, we can do nothing, without running the risk of someone not liking it, and suing us or worse. While I definitely am not for all the things that local government does, we do have to take into consideration, what the great powers in Lincoln and Washington direct us to do.
That needs to be changed.

Hi Nero,
I too am a graduate of Ord Public Schools. At the time I thought I got a good education, there are some classes I should have taken and didn't, some I did take that didn't do me any good in real life and a few that were not offered that could have done a world of good. I did not say in answering the questions from this website that students in general were getting a second rate education. I know of several families that had children who were slipping through the cracks in grade school (open classrooms, dyslexic child, didn't get along with the teacher, etc.) and they sent them to the country schools. Those children later attended Ord High School and graduated. The country schools are a safety net for the kids that may not do so well for whatever reason. The last stop on the that train is homeschooling for the kids who just don't fit in to a standard public school. I chose to homeschool my two oldest children because of their career choices. Ord High did not offer the classes my daughter needed to pursue a marine biology career. We could better tailor her studies through the homeschooling route. Its a pain but I am seeing that my daughter gets the best possible education she can before she goes to college. The state of Nebraska makes it harder for a homeschooled student to get a diploma that it does for a public schooled student. They are required to take more math, health and science classes. I would like to see the public school students (of which I have TWO in Ord Public Schools) have the same opportunity as my homeschooled ones. Thats all.

Try try again. The first one didn't take...go figure.
I too am a graduate of Ord Public Schools and at the time thought I got a good education. There were classes I should have taken and didn't, classes that I didn't need in real life and classes that were not offered that would have helped a great deal later on. The comment concerning the rural schools was meant to emphacize the need to keep them open as a safety net for those students who do not function well in the traditional setting. I know several families whose children started to fall through the cracks at Ord Elementary and they sent them to the rural schools. Subsequently they graduated from Ord High School. The only other options for those parents would have been St. Marys or to homeschool those children.
On the subject of homeschooling, yes two of my children are homeschooled and two of them are students in the Ord Public School System. I want the best education possible for my children and Ord did not offer the classes needed for my daughter in her pusuit of a career in marine biology. With the homeschooling option we can tailor her classes to meet those needs. Homeschooled children are required in the state of Nebraska to meet tougher requirements for education than are public schooled students. They have to take twice as much math, science and health classes as their public school counterparts to receive an equivilent diploma. I would like to see Ord Highs students offered this same opportunity.
By the way, if you are commenting on this blog, I would suggest you copy your comments until you see they have been posted. This is my third try and its getting old!

Agreed! Although the name calling was getting to be a little on the silly side. (black, african-american, negro, native american, indian, red-man, white guy, cracker) If we could all agree that we are AMERICANS I don't think PC would have gotten the start it did. It just gives people the right to gripe about being "victims"! I'm with Teddy Roosevelt, "There is no room for hyphenated Americans." As for prayer in schools, well thank you Madeline Murray O'Hare. Lincoln and Washington....Great Americans....crappy cities.

serenity, I couldn't agree with you more. But, as you can see in the present national elections, there are no americans anymore...Everyone has to have a title, such as whitey, etc. That has even carried over to our state legislature, where it is no longer, two people running, but now has to be a Democrat and a Republican, altho I thought it was supposed to be non-partisan.

Nero first bashes the candidates who stand for fiscal frugality, and then in the next paragraph decries all those who bash others. Face it Nero, this is exactly what your education gave you: the ability to stare logic in the face, twist it to fit your prejudices, and walk away thinking all is right with your posting. Nero is the type who will vote for Obama because he is fascinated by Marxist doctrines, never having been exposed to them in the past, or to the horror of their fruition. Maybe Nero is the same student who stood up at one of the school bond informercials (for which we all have already shelled out over 100 grand) and stated: "don't worry about how much a new gym will cost, I deserve it"!!!!!

I have given up on being Republican. I am now a Sarah Palin moosekilling, lipstick wearing pitbull CONSERVATIVE. (ok, I don't really wear lipstick but I carry a tube just in case I have to poke some jerks eyes out) That and my Smith and Wesson....

Conservatism seems to have gone by the wayside. Everyone wants something for nothing. I am sending Senator Nelson a letter. letting him know that I want 50% of his salary, if they start spreading the wealth!!! Think I will get it???

GO BIG RED!!!!!

Give Oklahoma all they can handle!!!! and a little bit more............

Nero - Friday, October 31 2008 at 8:02am

First of all, Ordian, I fail to see where I "bashed" anyone. I drew attention to what offended me about what they said, without attacking their personal character, which is what you just did to me. Let me straighten this out before you just start throwing me under the bus. 1. There is no way on God's green earth that I am voting for the Socialist candidate, Obama. I even think that McCain is too liberal, but he is the lesser of two evils. 2. What my education got me was the sense to see that you are not arguing with logic, but rather with ignorance. You don't know who I am or what I am about, so you try to explain it in a way that makes me look bad. For your information, I have not endorsed any candidate or endorsed AGAINST any candidate either. I have just posted my criticisms as I have read through the forum on this site as I think that the more questions get posed to them, the better they will be at looking into the problems and coming up with a beneficial solution. As far as a new gym goes, if it could be afforded, I would be for it because I know how many groups and classes use it, but right now issues with the economy and other factors dictate that it should be highly scrutinized. And by the way, if you studied Karl Marx like I did, you would know that he had lofty ideals that never were implemented correctly. Communism was not Marxism, it was just an extremely bad interpretation, so saying you lived through it and I didn't really isn't the correct statement. And just so you don't "twist" that one, I have never agreed with Marx and I never will. As for saying I'm the student who stood up at that meeting, I obviously can't be if I've been to college and she is still in high school.

Lawman13 - Agreed, give Oklahoma a run for their money!

As long as we are on the subject of elections, while reading the paper I found something that was very interesting to me. Three people, who are running for re-election in city and county races
(and of course are unopposed) have no ads in requesting support. Even tho they are unopposed, it would seem to me, that if nothing more than a courtesy, they would have an ad requesting support. Guess they don't need any support, and from me that is exactly what they will get. NO SUPPORT!

This is the best news any of us have had...ever!

First, the bad news:
We're being invaded by Martians.

.

And now, the good news:
They eat politicians and pee gasoline

"I have been listening to the comments of Volf, Stevens, and Baker "
Ah ha, the subliminal intent of the advertising has infected even Nero's mind - there is only a 1 out of six chance that Nero typed the order of the candidates the same as on the signs - advertising works!!!

"I take offense to any person that would for the most part say I had a second-rate education because I wasn’t part of the country school system or I wasn’t home-schooled."
Nobody said anything close to this except Nero - this reveals the inner workings of Nero; perhaps we can alleviate his feelings of inferiority....

"me, a public school graduate, as a bad influence on their children"
here here!!!

"Stop bashing others for your own gain, win on your own credentials. If anyone has a problem with this, then I guess we know who can’t win in a positive manner."
Nothing antagonistic here, naw....although it sounds suspiciously close to what Petska's son posted in the Quiz.....n'est-ce pas?

"What my education got me was the sense to see that you are not arguing with logic, but rather with ignorance" counter posed with
"I drew attention to what offended me about what they said, without attacking their personal character..."
I suppose there was somebody in Granby City Hall just like Nero....

This was obtained on a Google alert and is from KHAS TV.

(10/31/2008) By James Wilcox - A major U.S. ethanol producer with plants here in Nebraska is facing some serious financial struggles Friday night. The Associated Press reported Verasun is considering chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Last month, the company's management team retained Morgan Stanley to try and fix its financial situation.

High corn and energy prices and a poor economy are affecting the company's bottom line.

Despite the concerns, officials in Ord where there is a Verasun Plant remain optimistic.

"It is the same thing that we are in with the financial crisis that we are in today, is yes we may lose a business from time to time, but at the same time you have to keep an attitude of being able to bounce back and addressing those issues very proactively and progressively," said Caleb Pollard, Valley County Economic Development.

The Ord facility has about 40 full–time employees. Verasun also has plants in Albion and Central City.
