Everywhere we look, austerity measures are cropping up, state government, even the county hospital is laying down the hatchet. There are no elected officials with any plan to pay off any bonds early. Of the fifty million dollar debt loaded on this county in the past year, fifteen million goes to the bankers and bondsmen. Bonds are sold deceptively. the amount of a bond is announced without reference to the total cost of the project. The school bond was ten million, the cost of the school building project is fifteen million, before cost over runs. the fire hall bond was 1.5 million. the cost of the fire hall IS 1.8 million. before cost over runs. not counting "legal advice" summoned by unelected officials who can't discuss problems with their boss, elected county officials. Legal advice is not very important to a board. Fiscal advice is.

Bell, California - The taxpayers are outraged at the extreme costs of their public servants compensation (salary). Here in Ord, Valley County, Nebraska, there is one who criticizes the volunteers public service...go figure.

OrdFF - Wednesday, July 28 2010 at 5:08pm

To be fair Hunter never criticized the "Volunteers" and their public service. He/She has criticized the way tax dollars are being managed or lack thereof. I bet if you asked Hunter he/she would say they appreciate members of OFD and their service to the community. He/She is just not happy about the way they are handling the funds...Two different arguements if you ask me.

sting - Wednesday, July 28 2010 at 11:10pm

Hunter grateful? Why should anyone have to ask if hunter is grateful? Can't he/she express his/herself without he/she taking the hint to? Wasn't it hunter that lumped the OFD in with the "insane money grabbing power throttling small town gangsters..."? It looks like hunter has already expressed his/her thoughts and gratitude about the volunteers. Or is this just one of those gray areas, it's difficult to distinguish.

rock - Thursday, July 29 2010 at 9:04am

lets move this out of the gray area. SELL THE HOSPITAL

Mr. Universe - Thursday, July 29 2010 at 9:43am

My my, lots of catching up to do! One question, heard second hand. Does the school board have a contract signed yet with builders? Last school board meeting Max Kroeger said the lawyers were just working out some small deatails. Also (ok, another question)I heard they knocked down the wrong wall in the highschool during remodeling, anybody know anything about that?

Shakes - Thursday, July 29 2010 at 1:55pm

Hunter - Get your facts straight! All three bonds that we have right now are amounts set in stone. "Cost over runs" can't be added to those bonds because doing so would negate the votes we made on a specific amount. I'm sure they could use general funds or break their piggy banks for small over runs, but just like any business doing a project like this, they will more likely come in under those amounts than over so that they don't have to ruin plans they had for those other funds. No inside info here, just plain old common sense!

Mr. Universe - Been hearing a lot of rumors flying around about the school. Last one I heard was that they are over a month behind. Just remember that they are rumors until you have a valid source. In my opinion, I wouldn't ask anyone on here for factual information on the school!

rock - Thursday, July 29 2010 at 6:30pm

Shakes, this factual information you speak of,...does this include your purported facts in your above comment,...?

sting - Thursday, July 29 2010 at 11:33pm

Leave it to shakes to speak out of both ends at the same time.

People who’ve been immersed in typical university or college training, where they routinely teach the delusion of Keynesian economics, are, in their adult lives ill-equipped to see the danger of more debt and government spending. Worse, they come to believe debt spending is an “economic investment” that we will “all” benefit from. With his recent comments on KHAS Caleb Pollard from our Chamber of Commerce is right in economic line with former homosexual John Maynard Keynes - an economist/propagandist who systematized this lunacy.

'Austrian' economists have been exposing this fraud for years. Nebraska’s champion former Congressman and father of Omaha’s ‘Oracle”….that is, Howard Buffett, who believed passionately in a gold-backed dollar as the Austrian school does, tried to warn America about the Keynesian system in the late 1940s. Howard Buffett said it may take many years but America’s paper money system would eventually destroy the American economy with debt and taxes. Few listened, including his son Warren. But now Warren himself, late in life, is trying to sound the warning of the immoral consequences of Keynes’ foundational error – paper money. Google Warren’s recent advisory for investors to read the book “When Money Dies” by Adam Fergusson….

…Most will now pay dearly, as Fergusson points out.

When U.S. Treasury Secretary Guitner went to Beijing University last summer and told Chinese students their foreign reserves held in American dollars were safe – they replied by publicly laughing at him. The most productive nations in the world now recognize America’s debts are bringing the nation and our dollar to the breaking point.

Keynesian cheerleaders like Pollard will not shut up until the devastation is all around us and then they’ll just slither away, discredited, leaving what’s left of the productive base with the great hardship. “As a whole” Mr. Pollard the taxes on the productive base are going up in Valley County, relentlessly…. to pay for most of this new debt.

Pollard’s idea of economic development will not provide prosperity to Valley County. Such “development” is a communist ‘planned economy’ role that doesn’t belong to the government in the first place. Nor will new young families with children remain here after the “stimulus” of a few publicly debt-funded construction jobs evaporate. The hospital, school building, new housing development, swimming pool and fire hall debts will not lead economic prosperity; they will become ball and chains around our necks.

Anonymous good post. I am amazed at how few people do not make the connection between our country's tremendous debt load and Valley County's debt load and how it is going to affect them and their families. I recall one of the school board members made the statement that we will be facing high inflation in the very near future and that we would be paying the school bond with cheaper dollars, promoting debt at this time was a sound investment. To me that statement reflected little understanding of the financial condition that we are in, to include a debased currency with hyperinflation. We have failed to learn from history.

tincan - Tuesday, August 3 2010 at 4:00am

Let me get this right, if you have high inflation and you go into dept before it hits, then you can more easily pay off the dept because the dollar is cheaper. Rock did I read that right. If I did does high inflation mean we have more money? Does high inflation mean we have the ability to spend more on ourselves and pay off dept? I do not understand how Ord thinks they can keep spending money, unless it is based on the idea the propery values will continue to go up and all the people that own property will always be making more money so they can give more to the government. As everone knows, property value is not based on income, like income tax is. Say a farmer or rancher loses alot of money, unlike income tax, it is not adjusted, it just keeps going up and up. Maybe if we all did what Ernie Chambers wants, that is all land belongs to the govenment, then we would not have this problem. Glad I am getting old and will not see the country brought down by the ligs.

rock - Wednesday, August 4 2010 at 9:23am

Tincan, You got it right. I was shocked about the school board member's statement alluding that debt was a good thing to acquire at this time. I am sure that within the next two years, we will be seeing the ugly face of high inflation, stagnate wages, and unemployment going even higher. I believe better economic times for our country are behind us and considerably harsher times are in our future.

Baa...Baaa....Black(evil) Sheep
Being led around, being manipulated without knowing it....following the "boss hog" Thinking it is for the good of the people. All of these special projects costing us millions of dollars. The cost burden on a few ....people should know better but they don't. They do not do their own research on projects and leave it up to others who really don't know what they are doing either. Be sure we will all pay. Some a lot more than others. Good post anonymous.

Falcon, I hear Randy Cullers will be leaving the Stowell Law Firm and Tom S. Kruml (slick) will be filling in as city attorney for the time being. As the story goes Bob Stowell was not interested in the job as city attorney citing that he is retired and is always accused of taking over and running things. Strange concern of Bob Stowell, as he still has a member of the Stowell Law Firm within the city functions. It appears to me to be no difference.

sting - Wednesday, August 4 2010 at 11:26pm

Rumor has it Andrew Mihm, the Sandhills Giant of KNLV will be leaving us to take a job with NTV. There appears to be alot of long faces across the street from the radio station at boss hog's headquarters. Grumblings were heard that they will now need to find a new thug to assault visitors coming into the community who refuse to give interviews and those who oppose the boss hog agenda.

irish one - Thursday, August 5 2010 at 8:11pm

Speaking of long faces, there's one at the P.O. too. Somebody's concerned about who they will get to monitor the police frequencies for when they get turned in for DWI, who will make cell calls to warn them and who's gonna be the designated Dave now?

crash - Saturday, August 7 2010 at 12:53pm

Notice on the front page of the whiz marty petska got some free advertising at anothers expence. Pretty good deal to not even have a float in the parade and get GRAND PRIZE!!

falcon - Saturday, August 7 2010 at 10:45pm

Rock,
Been away for a few days, just a thought on your post.
I doubt that Cullers will start his own law firm, bet he just opens another branch of the office in Chadron.

When everything hits and the taxes start coming due and everyone is livid, they may need to move away and have a business set up in another town. His kids are going to college there, he has family ties there. Family ties here may not be so good.

Maybe he sees the light.........????????

As far as slick goes, Rock you are right... what's the difference?

Sting,
If the rumor you speak of is true, it is expected. He is a liability. They will give him a good reccommend and send him on his way. NTV did a story on the assult but don't know if they know it was him that did it.
He won't last long there if he continues with his same behaviors.

I see the great big new school bus was painted by the husband of an employee of boss hog. Don't you worry, if you are on the right side of things you will be rewarded. This happens all over town.

It is nice to see we have a great big new hospital with no doctors, a great big new gym being built with fewer kids attending, a newly decorated down town with few retail stores, and where are the jobs?????????? Oh yeah, build it and they will come. Next is a new swimming pool. Who is going to pay for that???????
