Economic development changes proposed
A bill that would amend the Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act was heard Feb. 24 by the Urban Affairs Committee.

LB525, introduced by Omaha Sen. Mike Friend, would increase to five-tenths of one percent the amount of funds a city, village or county could collect from local tax dollars for voter-approved economic development purposes. Currently, the maximum is four-tenths of one percent.

The bill also would expand the list of eligible economic development programs to include community marketing, private tourism development and workforce attraction and retention.
Cities and villages would not be allowed to spend more than 30 percent of revenue raised over a 12-month period on housing projects.

Friend said the bill does not change the requirement that political subdivision voters must approve all economic development programs.

Caleb Pollard, executive director of the Valley County Economic Development Board and the Ord Area Chamber of Commerce, testified in support of the bill.

Pollard said the local option municipal economic development program has empowered small, rural communities to help themselves through micro-enterprise and small business initiatives.

He said Ord has experienced 12 percent growth in non-farm jobs in the last few years, in spite of a difficult economy, and has an 80 percent occupancy rate in its downtown district.

“We still battle population decline,” Pollard said. “But this program works.”

Lynn Rex of the Nebraska League of Municipalities also testified in support of the bill.

Forty-six municipalities across the state have plans under the development act that have created hundreds of jobs, she said.

There was no opposition testimony and the committee took no immediate action on the bill.

Another way to get our bucks??????

I guess I wonder whatever happened to businesses providing their own capital for their ventures. I have seen enough of cities providing the funds and then the company leaves as soon as it is used up.

Everybody wants someone else to pay!!!!!!

I just checked out the posting on Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center for a new police chief for the city of Ord. This job listing is incomplete, it should state within the minimum requirements; applicants will also be required to ignore, certain members of the city council, and
allow to them DUI, as well as, inform them by cell phone when they have been reported for the same, and to engage themselves in other cronyism matters, as deemed necessary for them to keep their jobs, to include informing them that they are under investigation relating to illegal drugs. As an additional note, oversight by the mayor and city council will be non-existent, so the applicants may conduct themselves accordingly.

Rock, my husband & I laughed hysterically! This is so funny, but oh so true. Everybody in town knows this is the only reason that the city will not talk to the county about the Sheriff's Dept. taking over the police duties in town.

BIGMUG - Monday, March 9 2009 at 7:19pm

How about some one calling in a false report of a DUI!??? Do you think they should get off without some penalty??

when you see someone cross the street staggering, who is a known town drunk. They get into a vehicle, start it,it is a fair assumption, they are about to drive the vehicle. When they are diagonally parked,on the east side of the street, at the curb, when the known town drunk backs away from the curb,it is again a fair assumption that the vehicle would be north bound. The county attorney agrees, and says get the drunks off the road...reguardless of who they are,or who they think they are.

Maybe we should connect the county with the city. I really don't think it would make that much difference in Ord, Ne. Or we can keep looking for some recrute out of the accademy. Either way Ordites will still get away with what ever they want to by who they know and who they ----. But we can't have it both ways now can we?
